Myth 1.8 Public Beta 2

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

Myth 1.8 Public Beta 2

Post by punkUser »

Hey guys, public beta 2 is out for 1.8. This is likely to be the last PB before final release so please test it and post any bug reports to the forums so that we can get them fixed.

Here's a snippet of some changes folks here might appreciate from PB1:

* Moved unit trading dialog to the top of the screen.
* Swap shift behavior so that cycle presets now centers on the selection by default. Use shift to only select.
* Prevent a # key double tap from switching formations in place if (a) the two taps had different modifiers or (b) the first tap was used to set/recall a preset.
* Made unit experience display toggleable (and remembered) by double clicking, between showing a number after 10 kills or only when the status bar fills up.
* Made alphabetical vs. mesh count sorting toggleable (and remembered) by clicking on "Campaigns" or "Mapsets".
* Fixed some causes of FPS slowdown and OpenGL not working in PB#1.
* Fixed occasional "ERROR" message getting shown in game description.
* Fixed several OOS bugs when playing with older versions.
* Fixed "cannot find foundation files" issues with localized versions of Myth II.

Grab it here:

Full change list here:

And finally, promo video for anyone who missed it:

I'd love to organize some KOTM games as well if people are down.

Need a button, "Show all levels in scenario"
So people do not have to hold SHIFT and click a mapset to see all the levels.
It is not intuitive to hold shift.

Thx for returning cycle preset centering.

Still need the trade screen during loading if captain because enough people still have shitty computers that it matters. An extra 2 mins to piss or grab a drink matters.

Yea wwo is correct, knowing if you are captain or not while others are loading has ALWAYS BEEN very helpful!

All current Myth players (well most of em) Know to hold SHIFT to see all levels. BUT It never SAYS THAT anywhere, not in a readme or manual, so for NEW PLAYERS there should be a "Show all levels in scenario" button

Yeah not going to happen for 1.8. We've discussed proper ways to handle folks who load earlier (allow chat, etc) in the context of narrations and such especially, but that's all future work. If you need more time just add more PT, etc. And if you get bored waiting for players to load just alt-tab :)

Could possibly add something to the readme Renwood regarding SHIFT, but no UI features at this point.

You are so clueless. See, here's where the disconnect between coders and the actual gamers they're claiming to help stands out again. When there's X people playing a bunch of random games, having that not-captain free time allows people to have those breaks without fucking up the pace and forcing everyone else to wait on them. Without that screen, you get constant and unpredictable delays in between games while people take care of little things that inevitably come up. It has nothing to do with more planning time or boredom.

I was under the impression that the UT dialog was delayed so as not to overlap with the 'waiting for players' dialog. Since then the UT dialog has been moved so there is no potential overlap, yes? I don't know if I see a good rationale for not reverting to the behavior players expect if the conflict that prompted the change does not anymore exist.

Not sure why magma is removing a nice feature that was present before, seems pretty silly!

Saying that, I think many people who'll end up AFK'ing as captain without a UT box during loading, are doing the exact same with a UT box right now.

Yes seriously... you must keep that UT box there during loading... in team games... the moment I load and don't see that box, I get up and do something else for a couple minutes.

Removing the UT box is a huge oversight, Punk. Like Dant said... expect a lot of AFK captains as a result. This is something that will keep me, and probably many others, from upgrading. Please, fix.

I think you only half read what I posted Adren, I said people AFK as captain even with the UT box there and I'm not sure it actually makes as much of a difference as people say.

And in 1.8 you can just restart (instantly) if cap is afk anyways.

Given that I typically am seeing <5 second wait times these days even in largish games (and they are noticeably faster when people are on 1.8), I think you guys are freaking out about something that is going to be largely irrelevant, but I will forward on the complaint anyways. I don't think the right solution is to try and show just the UT box during load since it is now != status bar (that was pretty much a bug that went away with the rework of the status bar), but we could probably show the "you are the captain" message or similar. I've personally always wondered why it doesn't actually go one screen further and let you navigate around the map, check the units, etc. while you wait... maybe that's possible too; then you could see the whole team, positions, etc.

What would be the possibility of changing the way Box Selecting units works for captains. Like now if you are capt and you use Box Selecting for your units it also selects other teammates units. This messes me up sometimes especially if our units are close. Could it be changed to either be holding Shift while Box Selecting selects all units even teammates otherwise without Shift it just selects your units like it does when you are not capt? Or maybe vice-versa?

Yeah it's something to discuss for future updates, but definitely not something to fiddle with in the last few weeks.

So one thing that came up... at certain resolutions the UT box being at the top hides the scoreboard/time left in PT :S The current fix is to push the scoreboard down below the UT box, which works, but looks slightly funky. One potential option is to hide the status bar during UT which would be similar to the UT experience in 1.7.2, except that it is somewhat useful to have the status bar/difficulty information available during UT and you can toggle it with F6 anyways. Strong opinions on auto-hide either way?

1.8 film names need to go back to the previous style.

edit:

Probably skipping this version now that I've hosted enough to realize how much of a pain in the ass the plugin boxes are now. It was barely big enough for default maps, and now it's trying to share real estate with some new, completely unnecessary box. How many Quiznos employees does it take to totally fuck up a functional gui? Let's ask Magma!

Punk, Before with 1.3 - 1.7.2 f12 the auto camera, you COULD while hitting zoom in and zoom out while hitting F12 make it be able to ZOOM IN AND OUT WHILE AUTO CAMERA WAS ON! It was REALLY COOL, and now you CANT DO IT!

It may have been a bug before, but it was one of those awesome bugs that does not mess anything up, and should be left alone due to its COOLNESS FACTOR!

I wanna be able to still zoom in and out while auto camera is on!
And certainly with the 5X zoom out, being able to zoom in and out with auto camera on is more important then ever!

Please fix this!

Uhh, check your e-mail pallidice for an explanation/follow-up (or are you just ignoring that). You didn't follow the instructions properly, and I had no way to know your situation. Why didn't you reply to my e-mail as soon as you hit a snag? I would have come to find you right away if I had known there was trouble and where you were...

In any case thanks for the testing that you did and sorry you missed 20 minutes of gaming time. In the future I'll include the directory itself in a zip file too to avoid other people making the same mistake (although this issue will go away in the next week or two, and only affects folks who have to do the manual install in the mean time).

I have been having problems with 1.8 not loading. The maps will start loading then Myth will freeze at the loading screen. I have to control/alt/delete to the task manager to shut Myth down. Which I get the message Myth is not responding. It happens about half the time I play a game. It may happen 2x in a row then work. Or work a few times then not. IDK what is going on. Next time it happens I will see if there is anything on the Myth log and post it.

lol yea. I have another new much better comp but my wife is a gamer and she uses it. I pretty much only play Myth and this comp has always been totally fine for that. I dont want to have to buy another comp to play Myth. This comp is 10x better than any comp from 1998 so I dont see why it shouldnt work fine for Myth.

I just tried 1.8 again. Here is exactly what happened. Game went to loading screen. Blue bar loaded then it got to the "waiting for other players" it just froze there. I waited for a while. Tried to cancel but Myth was totally froze. When I clicked the x to shut it down I got the message. "This program is not responding."

There isnt a crash log. Here is the Myth log though.

Hmm strange. Did the host mention if he was "waiting" on you at all during load time? How long did the game take to load and was it typical? Have you updated your graphics drivers recently in any case?

Thanks for the report, will see if we can reproduce it internally but more information is always helpful.

Totally random, but could you try to make a save game in single player and see if that hangs?

If not, can you try with Use Multicore off? And if it still hangs with that, try with something other than OpenGL?

Yea Punk. I just tried saving a game. It freezes when I do. I tried it about 5 times. It opens the box for saving games and freezes. I have to shut Myth down through task manager. Where its says it not responding. I saved a game using 1.7 then was able to open that game with 1.8.

Edit: Just tried a few different things. I tried with Direct 3D it was totally unplayable cause was so slow like playing at half speed and I also had the same issue with freezing when trying to save a game. I tried with Software it was even slower like 1/32 speed but the save game did work. 32 bit on off didnt make any noticeable difference with any of the settings. Neither did Multiple Processors.

Huh, odd. Seems like the UI didn't synchronize with the window size or something. Will try to repro and fix.

Regardless if it happens again, pressing "alt-enter" twice will probably fix it (toggle windowed, then toggle back). Also, setting "Windowed" mode in prefs instead of Automatic/Full screen and your resolution to your screen res should avoid it altogether. Windowed is the preferred setting on modern Windows machines.

Nice ratios in any case :)

The firewall thing or the UI thing? I'll ping Myrd about the firewall thing; no idea how that works on Mac. On windows once you "accept" it once for a given EXE it won't ask you again. Anyways presumably it won't be an issue for the final/installer.
