new THI4F sucks, as predicted

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

Just like with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, these reboot people say they want to faithfully recapture the experience of the original, then go and do stupid shit like turning Garrett into a ninja with a new power that puts a glowing outline around interactable objects.

I'll probably get this when it hits a 75% off sale, but that might take 4 years. The big publishers don't understand market decay.

Now, I'm not saying it sucks as a game overall, just as a "Thief" game. As a generic I-have-$50-and-6-hours-to-kill game, I'd rate it a 2 out of 5.

This is most disappointing indeed... I used to play Thief 1 and 2 back in the day and loved them... was really looking forward to this, but probably won't even bother now.

^^ This. I still play AoW2 with buddies to this day and 3 looks to be doing all the right stuff. It's up for preorder now on GoG and Steam.

I only played the first, which I recall enjoying somewhat. I'll give my best recollection of it so the comparison makes sense. IIRC I had hoped for a pure stealth game from AC, interspersed with almost-superhuman acrobatics and combat abilities, which is what I got for the most part. The gameplay got repetitive for me, but the story was interesting enough to push through. Compared to THI4F, AC has better combat, better exploration, and quite frankly, a better story. Part of what I loved about Thief 1 & 2 was you just had a goal and a map; it was up to you to decide where to go and how much trouble you wanted to deal with. AC was a bit more restrictive in this with an expected lack of 'side missions' or interesting addons (no-kill/no-detect as part of the difficulty requirement), but its openness wasn't far behind T1/T2. THI4F looks open but isn't. No jump is part of it, but so are things like where you can add in your own interaction, like creating a new and temporary path with a rope arrow. All you needed in T2 was wood to shoot at (or a grate if you had a vine arrow). Not so in T4. Your paths are limited and usually pointless.

Now, I enjoyed Dishonored, which was the first "stealth" game (it's a little hybrid-y; if they had added an ability to dodge and/or block, it would've been one of the best FPSword ever) I've enjoyed since Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (2006!). Dishonored's story was incomplete, inconsistent, hokey, sentimental, and a million, zillion times better than THI4F's.

End tally

Gameplay 2/5
Story 1/5
Versatility/Replayability 1/5

(for comparison)
AC 4/5, 3/5, 2/5
T2 5/5, 4/5, 3/5

I haven't played any of these games, but apparently Thief II was good enough to get space in the NYTs.

The Dark Project is bewilderingly awesome. It shows the power of a mod community when not restrained by IP issues and developer faggotry, kinda like how M2 has survived and flourished despite the tiny current fan base.
