I actually was blown away recently by this. Killerking pm'd me about a week ago or so asking me for some pointers on how to improve at myth. I soon discovered that he was using only his keyboard to control the camera. I was fucking BLOWN away by this, I really still have a hard time believing it. 15 years since the dawn of myth, and people still do this. Now killerking is a pretty bad ulms newbie, so I thought I guess that was how he slipped through the cracks all these years. So now I am thinking that maybe some other horribly shitty players who have stayed horrible and shitty for several years now could also be doing some very very wrong shit like this too.
Now to add on top of all of that, with nine's recent video, it seems he TOO has always controlled his camera with only his keyboard. And this is a semi-respected oldschooler, who has been to mwc finals and shit. Now nine hasn't really been known to be a good player either, but maybe in the early days he was considered good in some way. He certainly isn't a complete newbie like killerking.
So now I am just completely floored and have to ask...who the fuck else does this shit? This is like one of the absolute worst things you can do. yes I know the default controls are there to pan your camera with your keyboard or whatever, but I am pretty sure I stopped panning my camera with my keyboard after my first 20 minutes playing the tfl campaign for the first time back in 1998. It is unfathomable that people still do it this way after all these years. It might explain why these players are not good...but what if I find a good player that does this? Then my mind will really be blown.
So hit up the poll, and if you happen to be someone that pans your camera with your keyboard, please let us know who you are and share your story. I always pan the camera with the keyboard. Don't see why this would be a problem for anybody, I've had top-notch camera control playing like this. Using the mouse to move the camera would just take time away from microing units. I don't get why you think this is better, to each his own I suppose.
Of course now with my finger injury my camera control is terrible (have to move my whole hand just for qe keys and having little finger on a instead of ring finger is taking a lot of getting used to) so I may temporarily use the mouse out of necessity...when it heals it'll be right back to wasdqe

Pretty sure I use just my keyboard to control my camera.
w,a,s,d and q. e rotate and orbit.
I do 95% of camera control that way anyway.
I think this is what I do anyway......I really never think about it it's basically how I've always done it and never considered changing it.

okay wow, I have now learned that I am in the minority on this, much like my use of only 2 presets. totally blown away.
you anchor your entire hand down by holding keys to move the camera, making it clumsy and slow to hit everything else you need to with the keyboard. this would be a minor issue for me since i only use 2 presets, and only my mouse wheel to cycl them. however what is even more amazing is that most of you all use 3+ presets making your keyboard hand even overloaded with more tasks to do. additionally, while in most games wasd are needed movement keys, in myth it isn't, and fumbling and accidently hitting a camera movement key is going to cause more misclicks. controlling with the mouse has minimal or no effect on microing units, because if your camera is in the right place, then all the relavent units are on the screen for you to click. when the action moves towards the edge of the screen, it probably means there is a slight lull in the battle (or if not, can easily just back out to create a lull, but I never have to do that anyway), plenty of time to quickly move the camera to reposition it. i also feel it is quicker and more accurate to control with because it is so intuitive. plenty of good examples of this in my youtube vids. I have yet to see a recording of a myth game where I found the camera control satisfactory, I guess that is because I am the only one that does it with the mouse.

wasd keys have never slowed down my use of presets, shift, ctrl, or anything my left hand would be doing. In fact I have to consciously slow myself down when playing Myth because the game can't handle high apm.

I do the same as Ghengis, but sometimes I use 2 presets depending on how many units I have. My apm is good enough when I am focused that I feel presets actually just slow me down and limits what I can do with individual units.

I guess I can understand it a bit better for people who use 2 presets and only their mouse to cycle them, or no presets at all. in that case your left hand isnt going to have to do presets which would be the biggest use of your left hand. instead you just have to ctrl click, taunt, space bar, guard, hit "f" to center a preset, and that's pretty much it. but having to select a preset while your hand is holding down another key trying to move the camera, is just mindboggling to me. and I am pretty sure most people do this.

Yeah I'm with Myrk on this - I even disable window edge panning so it doesn't happen accidentally. I always have my hand over WASD, etc. and have no problems hitting say 1-5 presets there, which is plenty. Note that doing Alt+# was a bit of a hand cramp as you note, but with alternate presets it's a breeze. To me it's much more important to be able to keep my mouse near where I need to micro units than to have to constantly "re-find" it after panning.
It's obviously very much personal preference, but I believe most of the "pros" in Starcraft, etc. use keyboard control. While that's not a definitive statement that it's better, I think it's strong evidence that it's probably not significantly worse...
Also GKG I thought you used cycle presets primarily instead of the Alt keys? Or do you use both?

i don't get that though, re-find what? are you accustomed to not having to move your cursor at all to be able to click something? try flicking your wrist to the right and back, your cursor goes back to a similar spot it was before, you don't have to "re-find" anything. your cursor should traditionally be about centered on the screen when you aren't using it, just so it is ready to click the next thing. pretty easy to pop the camera a bit and center the cursor again with a quick flick of the wrist. In a way, I think it has in-fact trained me to be even faster with my mouse and more accurate with my clicks for microing units.

Actually, sorry, wrong game. I think in SC the common thing is to hold the middle mouse to pan. I primarily use the mouse for camera control. For me it would be harder too use just the keyboard for the camera. For camera control I use Q and E to rotate or orbit whichever it is and the mouse for the rest of the movement mostly left/right forward/back. Basically I drive the camera with the mouse and use Q and E to steer. I turned off the corners rotate option.
For presets I usually set 5-6 during UT. I changed the set/recall key to ` so that it is in a straight line with the numbers that way I can just like roll my fingers to recall presets. With my middle finger hitting the ` key first. I roll to my index finger on the number as I go higher on the numbers I use my ring finger to hit the ` key. I used to just sit and practice those movements going up the numbers. I can recall presets super fast now. I dont always use all 6 or so presets but I like to have units on them anyway just in case. So I can select a unit that is off screen. I usually have arc/souls preset 1. Melee 2. Ghols 3. Duffs 4. Jman 5 and sometimes a wight or maybe a scout unit on 6. So that if by watching the overhead I see my scout is in trouble or I want to move my wight I can do it without moving the screen. Most of the time I use 1,2,3 a lot. 4 and 5 less but it is nice to maybe move my duff forward or give him an attack order when he is off screen. Having the Jman on a preset (5) is nice for heals instead of moving the camera and finding the jman then selecting him then the unit for him to heal. Its is easier to select preset 5 then the unit to be healed.
For Observer Constants for a while lately I was using a set up I dled from the Tain that had all the values multiplied by 2,4,6,8 maybe 10 also. I had it set to the highest. I changed it back to what I used for years. Basically the camera speed is like 6x faster than normal but I set the acceleration value less than that so the camera starts out slower then speeds up. With all the values set to 8x or 10x speed it was hard to get just smaller camera movements. Way I have it now I can make small movements but if I need to move it further it will speed up.

I mostly use mouse to move around... have my mouse speed set pretty high and camera speed set high too. Q and E to orbit... I do use W to nudge forward in battle sometime to center the action, but any major movement is done with the mouse.

I disabled corner rotation after playing mb 10 games of myth back when I started. I'm so slow with the mouse that I need to use keyboard to navigate. Mostly I use combinations of q+d,a+e and q+w, e+w. It's not as precise as corner rotation for rotating camera around a subject but works well enough for me. For panning I use mouse.

ehhh punk, i don't think they hold down the middle mouse button a lot to pan either, that takes your finger off of your clicky...very dangerous. doesn't seem very intuitive or fast either. where would you hear something like that from?

I dunno... I like keeping my units in whatever formation they are in presently, instead of resetting to the set formations any time I move. I've tried playing with it on a few times and it drives me insane.

er...yea...that's what persistent formations does pretty sure. it keeps the formation peristent...hence the name. it only changes when you change it. pretty sure you have them enabled then, pretty sure everyone has that enabled when they play. it is enabled by default, you have to manually disable it in the preferences.

mine is disabled... and by "maintaining my preset formations" i mean whatever disorganized mess I currently have the units in... not preset formations i.e. box, long line, etc. Persistent formations will put your bowmen (for example) to whatever preset formation (i.e. loose line) you last set them to every time you move. It is annoying as fuck, in my opinion.... Wouldn't be so bad if unit formation was more intuitive and each bowman went to it's closest position in line instead of criss-crossing all over the fucking place. that is probably the most annoying bug in myth... if you can even call it a bug.

it's really simple.
i type really really fast.
if there was a good way to control all units from the keyboard i would definitely do that over the mouse.
moving the mouse away from the center cant possibly be faster than tapping a button on the keyboard. i can hit presets 1-5 pretty easily. my mouse skills are terrible.

But yeah ultimately even though my mouse control is decent, it's still slower to move it to the side of the screen and back than to use the keyboard. You can be super-quick and accurate with the keyboard, and I'm very used to navigating from FPS games. Thus while I certainly buy that you can get good at either, I can't really see any disadvantage of using keyboard camera controls, especially with alternate presets. In that mode you really don't need to move your hand much at all. I think enter is the only key I use that isn't immediately accessible in the WASD position, and I don't use it that often (and I could rebind it if I cared... z,x,c,v and a few others are not particularly useful in their default mappings).
[Edit] Oh I should mentioned one thing though! I swap AD and ZX though so that AD *pans* not rotates. Rotating camera is pretty useless IMO compared to orbiting. Thus the WASD keys operate mostly like a FPS for me in terms of movement of the camera, then QE for orbit of course. That may have been critical information that I omitted

Interesting that you disable persistent formations adren. I agree that the behavior of units walking in and out of formations is pretty bad, but I still find it more useful than "whatever rabble they had been in" mode. The only time I find that behavior useful is when selecting all my units who are already roughly in the same formation, and as long as I don't set a formation for the full set, you still get that behavior anyways.
I can see the argument, but it seems like it would add a lot of additional formation inputs, and still not really solve the issue of units greedily choosing positions.

First thing I did when playing the solo campaign was turning off corner orbit. I didn't even use rotation at all, just set the camera to face north at the beginning of each game and used the mouse to move around. I think I only started rotating the camera when WW2 came out because it was unplayable otherwise.

ok wow i just tried persistant formations off...holy shit adren i have no idea how you play with that. like punk says, it basically requires you to spam your formation keys every time you click, extraordinarily annoying. furthermore, if you spread your units out, like often I may split up my melee from my melee preset, now if you click without setting the formation again, your click goes onto the center of the location of those units, making it impossibly difficult to move them correctly. you could be clicking on the center of your screen and it still has them moving to a location off screen. I would have to wait until I could bunch them together enough so that they are all on the screen again before I could stop spamming the formation button everytime I want to click.
really no idea how you play with that shit.
dac, yea i can understand if you are way better with the keyboard than the mouse i guess, its just a shame, the mouse is way more important than the keyboard. that i guess that is the best way for certain people to control their stuff, but it also explains why they will never improve beyond that. if people actually tried training with it they may actually improve both their camera and their unit micro.
punk, if you use a palm grip on the mouse, maybe you can have a mouse with 3 buttons to do that and not have it affect your mouse grip. if you use any other kind of mouse grip (fingertip, claw), then you will not be using 3 fingers on the top of your mouse.
also, it MIGHT be a little slower, negligibly so, but I would argue that it is more accurate. in any case, you could argue the same thing about how slow everything else is going to get for you with your keyboard if you do it your way, and that is going to be a lot slower and noticeable in that case for those other controls.
right now adren and I are the 2 best players who have weighed in here and we both use the mouse for camera control. I am not trying to rub it into the nose of the other side, but I am curious if some other really good players, particularly good 1v1ers since that emphasizes pure clicky ability, what they use.

Ehh, do you play many FPS games GKG? You get really good at using the WASD keys, and it's quite natural to do the same in Myth. I never have any accuracy issues really, and I feel that I could go even beyond double-observer-speed and still be fine. Of course I have a very nice mechanical keyboard so that probably helps, but I don't really find the need to be hyper-accurate on the camera in Myth anyways (especially now with double-tap to select and center on presets - negates the need for a lot of panning). Well Myrk said he uses keyboard controls and I think it'd be hard to argue that negatively affects his play at all. I'm not sure 1v1 is necessarily the best test case for it though, as you don't need a ton of camera control in most 1v1 situations. Unless you're talking something like desert terries 1v1 or - even better - KOTM 1v1, in which case that would indeed be a good test case, although it involves a lot of other awareness skills as well

Uhh PunkUser i don't think you should be using 5 presets at a time and I certainly don't think you should be cycling them with your mousewheel, at all.

Guess I've just gotten used to it... it's the way I've always done it. Tried it the other way and absolutely hated it lol. I guess it's all about what you are used to.

I dont know how anyone could use the alt key for presets. Thats so far away from the numbers. Is that the default? I have had my set up after about first month of playing Myth.
As far as persistent formations I have that off. I dont understand the "you have to spam formation key" thing. I dont have to do that. I use the actual formation number maybe 20% of the time or less. The other reason I dont use persistent formation is without it I have more formation options. For example my Box formation is kinda tight 1.75 I use it mostly with melee units. I can use it like that for smaller areas or for melee fights but if I am rushing arcs or a duff or whatever I hit scatter it basically make the same box formation with the units spread more. With persistent formations off I can keep them in that spread out formation as they march and move. Instead of them wanting to tighten up every time I click for them to move. Same with arcs I usually use long line. If I am in an arc duel or ghols are attacking I can scatter them and then move them in that scattered formation and they wont keep coming back together in the long line formation. If I want/need them to regroup then I use the formation key.
Also because the units dont maintain their relative position when they move in formation and the cross over each other. With persistent formation on if you have arcs in a line formation and you want them to move forward in that line they will start crossing each other every time you click them to move. With it off they dont do that.
As far as persistent formations I have that off. I dont understand the "you have to spam formation key" thing. I dont have to do that. I use the actual formation number maybe 20% of the time or less. yea ive played fps, mmorpgs, etc, i get the whole wasd movement thing, im fine with that as well.
so i am trying to play it the other way, and i just noticed another disadvantage, it is pretty difficult to orbit and pan at the same time. your fingers are in an awkward position on the keyboard to do that. with the mouse it is soooo easy and intuitive, and that is why i also think it is faster and more accurate. I don't, I'm just saying I can easily hit those keys without moving my hands, so it's a non-issue (was a reply to GKGs point). I typically use 1-3, the odd time 4 if I have a far away scouting ghol or something. I don't do that, but others do... not sure where you're getting that idea from. Cycle presets IMO is only viable if you use 1-2 presets anyways, but even then I dislike it. GKG: I don't really have an issue with orbit/pan as the most useful one I find tends to be orbit and pan the OPPOSITE way, so like A+E or Q+D. Rarely do I find myself needing to do Q+A or E+D which are the awkward ones. That said, it's certainly arguable that I avoid those camera movements *because* they are awkward, but I don't really find myself ever lacking - or even thinking about - camera control, so I dunno. Fair point in any case.

ohhh something else i notice when you are trying to orbit and pan at the same time with the keyboard, you have to release the keys at the exact same time otherwise it is going to throw your camera off a little bit. and of course that is extremely difficult to do. something else u dont have to worry about with the mouse.

I think I mostly use the mouse and the Q and E keys (the tutorial told me to!), when I zoom in to pickup pus I use C and V.

ah i see... when i downloaded bandicam anyways... made gameplay choppy but the video came out pretty decent. just a shitty random game, but shows camera control regardless... will post when done uploading.

okay so that is an example of pretty good camera control. i still want to see a video of someone who uses the keyboard to move the camera.
also about moving your cursor to move the camera: i think it actually makes your cursor movement much more fluid and natural. if you have some units near the top of your screen then you naturally want to push the screen forward a bit and your cursor is still going to be near those units. so actually i do think it is faster than the keyboard, we will never know until someone posts a video of it though.
and though i won't judge anything off of 1 random rabble game adren, that video is starting to suggest to me where your tunnel vision is coming from. when you aren't fighting, i.e. waiting for your units to move, you should be looking around. couldn't see what your teammates were doing the entire time. again, just 1 random rabble game i know, but my guess is that is normal for you.

well wwo, you want just your orbiting on your one hand, yea. that is way more important than panning. its much more natural to pan and select units with the same hand i believe.
