How much does the rights cost?

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

How much does the rights cost?

Post by Professional Killer »

Out of curiosity. How much does the rights cost to own myth2.

Let's say a myther that acctually cares alot for this game in general are interested in using a respectable sum of money on it as in me.
What does it really cost. What has to be done to get it popular again. Is it possible to some of that money back if I invest in this.
I know some of you have investigated this earlier and I think it has stopped due to money if i not misstaken

I have been quite lucky with my business and if I see a way to atleast get even in investing in this I acctually would consider it.

Those who know anythitng about this contact me via pm or here with general answers and please stay out of this thread if your are interested in ruining it.
I think this acctually is the only thread that will ever coems up here and be rather serious about this so keep it serious.

Lock this thread PunkUser if it gets unserious and i'll let ppl pm me instead

Seems somebody has referenced a 6 figure number in the past. I don't remember if it was on here or the Marius forums, but I believe I saw it in one of the threads pertaining to Renwood's kickstarter. I believe some of the Project Magma guys had looked into this and been given a sum. You might repost this in their stomping grounds, they might know best.

If you want the long tale, check out the numerous threads at the PM forums, but suffice it to say this has been tried by various groups several times. The issue is that Bungie at one point showed interest in re-acquiring the rights, thus pushing the potential price into the stratosphere. Last I heard they aren't even interested in talking if you're not offering in the 6 figures range. Other strategies like getting rights to distribute just Myth 2 (not the franchise) have been tried to but met with no more success. There's really just nothing in it for Take 2 to even bother with, and any amount of money we could reasonably come up with is small beans and would never be earned back by any viable business.

But yeah, I agree that either of your ideas would be fine. Hell even just being able to let people download the full game legally (from PM or GoS or somewhere we can advertise) would be better than nothing. Unfortunately, technically this is still all Take 2's property so the ball is in their court...

As people have said, the most viable path is for an indy to just make a Myth-like game but not call it Myth. Going after the actual rights is far more trouble than it is worth at this point.

I will also add that I would be willing to contribute as well, if it is feasible.

I burned 10 cds once and gave them away at a warhammer tournament. Not sure what the net result of that was, but the cost to me was neglible.

The best thing to do is to provide it as painlessly as possible to people that might be interested.

(the cds had all the myth:sb cd, plus patches, plus links to installing+patching+getting online)

There was a recent thread about this at the Tain. All that was mentioned was 6 figures.

My alternative idea in that thread was, rather than buying the rights, license them (cheaper). Maybe it could be done for $10-20K? Although you may never make that money back :P

License so Project Magma can make a FULL digital M2 game (copy the CD files, & use PM's installers/updaters) that is sold through some site, or Steam, or GOG.com, or on thetain using Paypal, or whatever.

If you want to push the license cost to the cheapest possible, ask for the license fee to be nominal, and in return T2I gets a free stream of profits from the sales that are made.

The terms of the licensing we could negotiate. What % of the profits go to PM (to cover costs, at least, and hopefully to pay PM for their time) & any investors? Are those profits annually capped? The license would have to allow us to publicize/advertise (unless T2I wants to do it instead).

We'd like the license to not preclude us making an offer to buy the rights, in case we ever get someone who can afford to actually buy the rights.

To convince T2I to grant the license for free/cheap, one approach might be to try to get a short-term license (2 years?), with bad terms for PM (maybe T2I gets 75% of gross sales, and PM's share is capped at $10K annually?). After 2 years, if it's making T2I money, maybe that's leverage we could use for better terms. And if it's doing little business...well, with the framework already in place, hopefully T2I would have no problem just renewing it as-is.

Or maybe a graduated payment scheme (either short-term or long-term)...like T2I gets 75% of gross of the first $100K (over all time, not just 1 yr), but if it ever goes over that (hah!), they get 50% of the next 100K, and 25% for anything beyond that. PM might like a 10 yr license like that.

So we offer T2I a lot to convince them to license for cheap, so they feel like they've got a chance to get the lion's share of anything that comes in initially, but eventually the terms become more fair (since we're doing all the work now, we've made the high-res textures, etc).

Maybe we could find a Myth fan lawyer to offer a boiler-plate license agreement for T2I's lawyer to review. Or talk to someone that has a soft spot for Myth/Bungie. Bungie surely knows of passionate Bungie-philes who are also lawyers, accountants, etc. Maybe Bungie can convince their friends to donate some time to Take 2 so Take 2 can have some kind of licensing setup that costs Take 2 little to setup, lets them keep all their rights, but maybe has some upside for Take 2 (money &/or PR).

Kirk: "He's a massive idiot, V8"
Pogue: "Frankly if this prevents Australians from taking over the game, I support it"

Breaking news, We have a caller from the Ecuador embassy in London.
This leak is not corroborated. What we have here is a potential warcrime, this source has not been verified by the organization.
