When do most people play Myth here?

I found out about this place yesterday and I want to know what is the best time of day/week to find most people to play with.

I played Myth TFL with my mighty Voodoo 2 GFX card about the time when it was released and it was one of my favorite games ever since. Sadly I never played multiplayer because I had a very bad internet in 90s and my LAN friends were not interested for it. Later I forgot about the game until I stumbled across Marius Net few years ago but it was very hard to find games to play so I gave up. Yesterday I found out about 1.8 patch and after little internet browsing I ended up here.

I guess it is never too late to start. Maybe I'll even persuade few of my friends to join here. We like strategy games and now that almost nobody plays Total War: Shogun 2 in multiplayer and Rome II is terrible we need our strategy game fix. Hope Myth 2 does the job.

The best time is 'quite late' if you're European like me.
However, I don't know where you live. If you type .time in the lobby you could calculate it; around 4-6pm EDT is the 'peak'.
Best day's are saturday and sunday.

I'd say the peak is even a bit later than killerking says... more like 8-10 PDT which is where you get the most overlap of north american folks. The west coast people don't get on until after 8ish usually.

As Milk suggests though, given the increasingly small state of the community, the best way to get guaranteed games is to show up for FFA night, join a tournament or otherwise participate in something with an organized time You can still get small-to-medium games throughout the day, but if you're looking for 16 player 2-team stuff you're better off with the organized times.

Myth is still a great game. The very fact that it has stood up to this many years of competitive play without fundamental balance or skill cap problems is a testament to the core mechanics. You probably already know this, but compared to other RTS games it is heavily micro-intensive. That's a large part of what has given it such a high skill cap; you simply can't control every one of your units as optimally as you'd like to in a reasonably-sized game, so every last bit of micro you can squeeze out of your fingers will benefit you to some extent

That said, beware that the skill gap is quite large between newcomers and the guys have been playing for 10+ years. Expect to lose a lot, and quite convincingly for a while if you've only played single player. If you have a thick skin though and are willing to listen to advice, watch films, etc. you'll get better quickly though.

One nice advantage of modern myth play is that most of the films of games played online are recorded and available for download. A good place to start if you want to get the feel for modern multiplayer myth is the MWC films for 2-team play and the FFA league games for FFA:

Thanks for the tips. I'm not afraid to lose and Myth is fun game even when you are losing. Body parts everywhere! So hopefully I'll catch up with yours 10+ years xp very quickly and even bring some friends along.

I'm not a stranger to competitive play and tournaments as I participate on Total war tournaments from time to time and these two games are somehow similar (multilplayer at least). As you said game mechanics are solid and game looks great with new community patches. Controls are maybe little clunky in comparison to new games but I'll get use to them. (sometimes when I want to select units I give move order to units that are already selected...)

On weekends I usually get up very early so we might have a chance to play, punkUser.

Yeah some of it is a little dated, although personally I find that the new "Alternate Preset Recall" option in 1.8 does a lot to improve the situation and bring it more in line with other RTS games. (Some more info in this promo video if you're curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXJwsdmtxFE).

I have Myth I and II on my HDD for years and I replay campaign every two years or so. Two days ago I was a little bored on work and out of the blue I thought "how is myth community doing?". I googled about myth and stumbled across 1.8 promotional video. I was amazed how good are the new features and how people still care about this game. So I googled to find if there are any populated metaservers and ended up here.

To punkUser: I started using Alternate Preset Recall but I need to get used to it a little as I now forget to press F before number, but I played just a few games. It is a little easier to control army with it.

I already tried to bring some friends here, who play modern strategy games, but they were repelled by the graphics which I think is great with texture packs. I even made a video of one of my MP games (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93flD5xhqr4) to show them how good the game is before I found out about drunken_deer tutorials which do a much better job at showing how great and deep the game is. I'll try to send drunken_deer tutorials to few more of my friends and hope they like it. I won't give up easily.

Yes it definitely takes some getting used to I was completely terrible with it for a week or so, but you do get used to it and after that period it's great. I'm so addicted to being able to double-tap a number to select and center now that I don't think I can ever go back.

Ha, yeah it's a hurdle with some folks. That said, given the prevalence of "indy-style 8-bit retro" games coming out over the past few years it seems like most people are able to get over it. Keep at 'em If they like micro-intensive games with a very deep skill cap, they'll eventually come around.

you get people interested in playing the game, by getting them joining the group and reading about it, also it has that link to get ppl to download the game as well. Steam is one of the easiest ways to get players associating with a 15 year old game dude. Its a permanent web page and those players joined can refer their friends quickly/invite them to the group ass well.

I joined the steam group and played around 15 games so far. Although I was losing I was having a great fun. I expect to lose another 100 games, maybe with some accidental victories, until I get used to interface, controls and get feel for units. The only problem is if other veteran player is having fun steam rolling me.

I think I can give a decent fight but I noob out too often and screw up army composition. When I have free time I'll watch some reps to pick up some tricks. Cya in game.

That is the thing though, you gotta get the shit kicked outta you 100 times before you know what the hell is going on ! Treat every loss as a learning experience and you'll still get a positive from losing a game. Very key in jumping on and accelerating the learning curve train.

Try to stick to just a few ffa game types like CTF and LMOTH. They're simpler and will let you get a feel for a "baseline" army trade before trying other gametypes.

You know, it might be a good idea to put together a playlist of YT videos that newer players can learn some basic strategy from. Any ideas? Don't forget that one thread where everyone recorded their playing style, that could be invaluable too.
