Does Anyone Remember...

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

Does Anyone Remember...

...the Myth TFL CB Tournament from back in early 1999? If I remember right, TFL was looking pretty barren because most of the players had migrated to Myth II but, there were still enough of us around to have a pretty fun tournament.

I can't remember both of the players on my team but if memory serves, one of them was an Admin who went by Sojourner. We took second place.

Those first couple years on Bungie.net... those were the days!

If you mean BNA Sojourn, that was Lord Ironfist... he still plays from time to time.

I remember those days fondly... though in 1999 I was still unimapping MMD... 3r2g0s lol... I think I only ever participated in one TFL tourney, other than a few MMD tournies... and that was D.A.S.T. (Dark Angel's Sucky Tourney). It was an FFA tourney in the dying days of TFL... good times, though I pretty sure my 14.4k dialup kept dropping me from games and I quit part way through :(

I remember using a 28.8 bps then upgrading to a 56k a couple years later. Most of the game drops I encountered back then came from hosts dropping the game in an effort to preserve their ranking.

Myth II was amazing but my fondest memories from the series will always be with TFL. The struggle to earn my Emp hat in TFL was far greater than earning one in Myth II.

Like you, I didn't play many tournaments. The only one I really remember was the cb tourney I described at the start of this thread. I remember taking just 1 duff and 1 fetch and bowling people down. Some guys used a line of 3 each but I always found that one of each was much easier to control. When Myth II came out cb games pretty much died. I've never really forgiven Myth II for that.

oh, carpet bombing lol... i thought u were referring to clan-based or something. a few of us were doing a bunch of 1v1 cbing a couple yrs back using vTFL... but it just isn't the same. And yes... I very much miss the troless cb wars :( I was a master with 1 fetch, 1 dorf... but you simply couldn't get the same range as 2 fetch/1 dorf, or the standard 3 fetch/5-6 dorfs setup on trow. I was in a clan that predominantly played Carnage dark lmoth... so I got very familiar with 1/1 and 2/1 setups :) what was your name on TFL?

My account name was SamsWrath but I used a couple login names; usually, Col. Kassad, Kassad or Icarus. I may also have used the name Fedmahn.

I never did the clan thing. Back then there were so many players it was easy to just log in, find some friends and play a game.

Semi's

Pepaa vs Shaister winner Shaister
Loser II vs Ol' Dirtae winner Ol' Dirtae

Finals

Never played, Shaister left for 2 months and was DQ'd.
Ol' Dirtae wins by default.(would have like to seen this since this was the height of auggy in *K*'s scandal of pushing balls off the map in ranked. *K* and tensack were at each others throats, went as far as impersonating posts on forums)

Last 1-1 tournament I remember.

Last FFA on b.net was won by Deadman, second place the vulture
Last Team was won by udog over tensack 3-2

I think too many people were in myth 2 and dismiss so many good tfl players that were on late.

Shaister was not the top dog as people say. *K* was okay but Shaister and a few *k* were able to transition to myth 2 well.
If anyone has backup for best players on myth, the answer would be Asurman (Red Phoenix) who held the comet for near a year.
The best duo I've ever seen was Shinco and Desperado both of tensack and shinco translated well to myth 2 in Ancrik.

Lets see about names I've never seen mentioned in other forums

MeekOne, Stark and Fingolfin of fists, all 3 great players
Sherman Tank, Pistol Pete and Clank tank of tank clan
MBT and Hadrian in *F* they combined with some tensack were in the lead for the winner spot in TWF's map tournament on marius.net before TWF abandoned the tournament because they got knocked out.
A few PoRN were very good

When I abandoned myth the top all around mythers were and funny most were admins

Shinco
Shaister (admin) no tournament win team/FFA/1-1 in tfl
Grass team title
Pepaa(admin)
Scorpion(admin)
Ol'Dirtae(admin)
Pele no tournament win team/FFA/1-1 in tfl
Deadman

Top teams

udogs - won the last tournament on b.net and basically had 50 members, strength in numbers. A game was always in play with them in it and they also made about all the new maps that came out and had an edge on everyone.
MIA - had some seriously good FFA and 1-1 players and made it to semi's on last 2 b.net tournaments. Deadman won both RoTFL FFA tournaments.
tensack - placed 2nd on the last b.net tournament and won the previous 2 team tournaments, won the 3-3 SP tournament on marius.net once b.net shutdown and 4 of the top 6 all around players named above were in it. Dirtae won the last 1-1 tournament on b.net and Shinco, Pepaa, Dirtae, G-far, Placid, Desperado, Grass and Loki, all held celestials or comet during the main-time of myth. And I think they absolutely destroyed your FoG team in DoTA and won the tourney.
Bountious Immortals?... This one i'm not sure because there were so many damn symbols in all their names. At one point BI owned all 5 top spots when TFL turned into a Lmoth Trow fest on b.net. Asurman was also in np and went on to win myth 2 tournaments, Scarface and batman were both good all around players and could whistle a tune on light maps.

I'm sorry but you are very very verrrrry misinformed. DAST was a FFA tourney, first of all, not 1v1.

Shaister WAS the best of the best on TFL... there is no denying this. The only really good top 10 list for TFL was made by Planetgazer *F* and posted on the udog forums, whatever they were called... mythtownhall or something. It was posted closer to the end of TFL, around the time that bnet died... the list included myself, shaister (#1), head (#2), lord ironfist, planetgazer, psidon, clank, shade, luke aaaand not sure who the last one was. I could throw out several names of other great players of that time period, and none of them would include any of the names you have listed :( i.e. Apollo, Chaoslord, Ratphlegm, 4bm, Fire, Loco Mente, T-Zoid, Wyclef Jean, Chronic (surpisingly good all-rounder for a tr0-hoor), and several others that I'd have to think hard about to remember their names. You have to keep in mind that most players unimapped in TFL... pretty much all the players you've named included... ppl tended to stick to games like MMD 2r2g0s, Carnage Dark lmoth, Trow BC, desert or creep CTF, grave lmoth, web bc, etc. The players I just mentioned were great at all aspects, excelled on light and dark, and with any units.

I know many of the players that you mentioned very well, and still talk to some of them. Deadman was a great mapmaker, good at Carnage Dark, but otherwise not a top player. Grass was a great player, but retired early and played light maps almost exclusively. Can say the same for Pepaa, though he stuck around longer than Grass. OD still logs in once in a while... and like all other members of tensack, ancrik, etc... was mainly into light maps. He was a pretty solid player all around though. I was only in FoG for a short time... ended up getting kicked out when my ego grew out of control, so no idea about any DoTA tourney. My peak skill in TFL was definitely later on, like... early mnet days.

udogs players were great guys, but not great players... sorry!
shinco, while a good friend of mine, was a great player by early-mid TFL standards, but faded out near the end. Desperado was about the same until he disappeared off the face of the earth. <3 u rob :D
MBT and Hadrian were no where near the best players in *F*... the best players in that clan were Planetgazer and Cosmo... MBT just played more so maybe was better known... but he was also a dick.
Sherman and Pistol Pete were good, friendly guys... but not nearly among the best during any era. Sorry, not even close.
Nobody in PoRN was very good... I played with them a ton.
Fingolfin was a clanmate of mine early on in TFL... He was not very good at TFL except MMD, but became a pretty decent player during his M2 days (played as Agent Smith of Agents (evil) for MWC 2004.
RP was a good player, but was a rank whore. Comet really meant nothing on TFL because nearly ever celest bashed dummies and JS'd newbs, top dropped, etc to gain rank.

From what I am reading, you seem to be focusing on 1999... while the player count did drop, people definitely continued to improve at the game, though admittedly, a lot of talent left for myth 2... leaving those of us with shitty computers or just a preference for TFL behind. I know I definitely wasn't the only person that couldn't run m2 properly haha... fire arrows made my computer almost freeze solid and maps with a lot of water were damn near unplayable.

no, no, no, no, no.

udogs were just a bunch of fun loving newbs... they literally did not have a competitive player in the bunch.
MIA unimapped Carnage Dark lmoth (with CB allowed). I played literally thousands of games with them. They certainly had some good players, but not GREAT players.
tensack was solid... some great players came out of that clan.
BI whored tro BC as far as I can remember... RP was their best player, but I don't recall the others be so great... SomeLoser certainly wasn't very good.

Why anyone would stick around and play TFL after myth 2 was released is beyond me (unless they didn't have a computer that could handle it). Myth TFL was a stepping stone for a great game, but was far from a great game itself, wayyyyy too choppy.

Because we liked the gameplay/people better.

TFL competition was complete shit through and through. As much as Myth 2 has pretty much always been a joke competitively it makes TFL look like an AARP bowling rec league. You can be nostalgic all you want about the fun games but lets not kid ourselves here.

Meek, Stark and Fing were awful players and even worse at Diablo 2.

Desperado and I were a great time btw, because we played all the way back to the TFL demo together, on grave and only grave. We never had to even say anything and knew what we were going to do, react, etc.

If you ever really noticed in the history of my myth career, I stopped my absolute caring when he and Juice quit playing.

We had a website with forums at one point in time.. but that's been gone for a long long time... I had a few of their emails at one point, but they were ISP emails and people move on... they stopped working years ago, too. So no... I really have no way of contacting any of them :( I think the last member I saw online was Mech... and that was before playmyth.net went down. Gone forever.

Shaister and Head definitely hold #1 and #2. But Luke as in sillygoose/operation ivy Luke? He had a great host and an awesome shit talking personality, that got him and I into a lot of trouble but he wasn't a top player, good at light and web, but not dark maps - really good guy though. And most of the players you mentioned there, were decent all around people to play with. Good example being Shade - if we were doing say, 2v2 in ranked web lmoth - and we started Southeast, he was middle, he'd just let us up and give us time to setup, ask if we were ready - then hand us our ass on a plate.

Tank Clan and PoRN were a cool group of guys. uDogs were the reason I stayed away from TFL Ranked for a while - they just wanted to host some games and enjoy themselves - and that they did.

A lot of the unimapping ticked me off, however I do recall Luke and I going to b.net ranked, hosting something like trow bc, 2v2...then switching to creep bacon or RiP Terr with like 15 seconds planning time...boy oh boy did we piss some people off hard core. Or we would keep the map trow and quietly switch to terr. Most of the time they played. Kids will be kids I guess.

Luke, Shade, and 4 Butted Monkey were products of their environment vs skill IMO. They were good, but they were more so a shinco/Desperado thing. They played together so much. They had an understanding of whatever map, and would beat up on people who would see a celest in a game and say "IM GOING TO BEAT THEM"

I was jumpstarted by them before as well.. They weren't perfect.

We liked you too much to jump start you Shinco, but I don't doubt that it could've happened. I remember it being just map swapping after a full blown lobby shit talk fest.

So far as the celest went, maybe right after a rank reset it was interesting but I didn't have any interest in staying with the high rollers. I was happy playing ranked FFA while losing my emp one day to pick it back up the next, with all of SwC (including Head), Xone, Daemon, Drinking Dave and rest of the assorted company. I know HeadHunter was in on those games from time to time as well.

I don't think Luke every held celest, expect as I said before, right after a rank reset. Him and I played a lot of creep and desert in both unranked and ranked. He had some strategies on those big maps for sure, nothing real spectacular but we made it work. He disappeared for like a year, came back for a day of Myth then off the face of b.net he went. Email, aim etc gone.

This is what happened with Desperado. He vanished. Came back for like a week, then he was gone forever. A while later I saw his name randomly log into AIM and I tried to talk to him. I got a reply "jeff don't live here no more" and it never logged on again

Shinco is badass. How can I not remember what a badass friend was up to?
Yeah it was something like twelve years ago to put it into perspective.
I'm absolutely guilty of switching from BC TROW to lmoth grave / mudpit light

I enjoyed their learning curve when it came to anything light. Kind of a train wreck in slow motion.

i will gladly cb you sometime after sunday this week, and i'll even restrict it to 1/1 if you wanna go there. you can play vtfl on myth2. i have no idea who you are but i'll win.

as for rankings, shai 1 head 2 shade 3 imo. i cant imagine the udogs winning anything but then again renwood has a mwc ring. luke had amazing melee skills which translated to being effective at tfl, period.

giliath signed onto mariusnet sometime in 2012 for a few brief moments, didnt respond when i said anything then left again. foggies are gone forever im afraid.

I wouldn't put shade top 3... I play with him A LOT before he quit... very good player, easily top 10, but #3 at the time really had to go to PG... he was an absolute monster back then at every aspect of the game... followed closely at #4 by LI, who was also a beast at TFL. Shade was awesome, but just not as well-rounded as those 2.

i witnessed him beat a team of decent players 1v7 on desert bc... and played with him a lot. he was good at everything, light and dark, one of the best cbers around, and certainly was not a tr0 hoor. and you, Spider ~TC~, were not in any position to be a judge of skill at that point in time... not to be a dick, just stating the facts... you blossomed much later.

I dunno.. Desperado lived a pretty fast life in Philadelphia. his cousin was arrested and put in jail for trying to rob a bank with a note that said "give me money"

After he ran, he still had the note in his pocket

Pretty sure wicked ways is either dead or in jail. Used to play with him all the time and he would disappear randomly for periods of time and come back after a couple years in prison. He got picked up for manufacturing meth last I heard.
