Auto hosting ... yes or no?

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

Auto hosting ... yes or no?

Post by Yankee »

Been running some auto hosts recently on GOS with CWR games. A couple of comments in the chat window were interesting.

zak : "why do you do auto host and then go akf dood?
zak: "why do you do auto host mate? it pushes players away when they log on

Enki : " why do you host and go afk man? kind of lamosity

Leaving aside the merits of CWR games for a minute ( thats an entirely different discussion) my understanding of the very idea of autohosting is to provide games to play when no one else is hosting. Being afk while auto hosting is inherent in the 'auto' part of the hosting session. What am I missing here?

They just prefer a non-afk host which of course is the ideal situation. Autohosts are good when there are no hosts around, but due to how they work people struggle to get it right. Some either manage to get booted because they didn't check in on time while others just don't like the map choice and leave. The only way for the autohost to switch to the next map is if a game is started. Even if they all just suicide to force the autohost to switch to the next one, or just playing it out of course. Due to those factors, autohosts get a bad reputation in general. On the other hand, some times players say things to get the host to come back even if its just to ask them to switch the map list.
