GKG Officially Retires / GKG's Myth Resume

A single berserk reached us yesterday, after having come all the way over the mountains from the city of Willow, fourteen hundred miles away. He delivered to Alric a single package the size of a man's fist, wrapped in rags, and refuses to talk with anyone about events in the West.

GKG Officially Retires / GKG's Myth Resume

Post by Giant Killer General »

As mentioned previously, I am most likely retiring from myth tournaments. HATERS REJOICE!

Before I go, allow me to share some highlights of my competitive mythings. Here are some fun facts about what I have done:

As a Myth tournament organizer:
• I hosted the only melee tournament ever (which I also won)
• I hosted the only myth tournaments using a divisional / ladder format (3 of them which I also won all of)

As a Myth scholar:
• I wrote 5 articles on myth skill and strategy
• I wrote 60+ pages in notes on strategy while organizing tournament teams over a 4 year period. I am pretty much the biggest myth strategy expert/nerd ever.

As a Myth captain:
• I captained the greatest and most dominant myth team ever (The Chicago Bullz), which was the closest time any team has come to sweeping an MWC grand finals match (final score 6 solid wins, and the 1 loss being the only close game of the series)
• I captained an MWC bottom bracket finals match being down 0-2 in games and coming back to win the match by winning the next 3 (mwc12 SP vs NC)
• I captained and won an MWC grand finals match against a team that swept my team 5-0 previously in the tournament (mwc12 finals SP vs My Team)
• I captained and won with the least stacked roster of any MWC championship team (4 brand new MWC champions, which was also 57% of the roster, the most since mwc2009). This team also had the smallest roster of any MWC championship team (only 7 players, i.e. every player played every game), (mwc13, TMNT)

Some notable achievements I share with just one other player that I know of:
1. Winning the most MWC Championships ever, at 4 (Paris ties me)
2. Captaining the most MWC Championship teams ever, at 3 (Rabican ties me)

And finally, some notable records I hold exclusively in the all-time myth record books:
1. Only player to win a melee tournament
2. Only player to achieve 400+ damage (old damage numbers) while pretty much single-handedly winning a game in an MWC grand finals match (barb valley ctf, game 5 in mwc09 finals)
3. Only player to captain 2 MWC championship teams with completely different core team rosters (Bullz/SP and TMNT)
4. Only player to go undefeated in MWC Grand Finals matches after 4 appearances (statistically, even if you were guaranteed a spot in the finals for 4 MWC’s, there is still only a 6.25% chance of this happening)
5. Only player to go 4 straight years without losing a 1v1 tournament (winning 4 out of 4 1v1 tournaments since 2009)
6. Only player to go 5 straight years without losing an MWC (2008 was the last time I experienced losing MWC)
7. Only player to win 3 MWC’s in a row (4 in a row amongst those that I participated in)
8. Only player to win MWC with 20 different teammates (not counting those who did not participate in the finals matches)
9. Only player to win MWC with at least 14 different teammates who had not won MWC before previously (not counting those who did not participate in the finals matches) (that’s an average of 3.5 new MWC champions on each of my championship teams)
10. Only player to create a new gametype - King of the Map (thanks for Punkuser for building it).

This would be what my myth resume looks like. What does yours look like? Share your myth resume!

browning
liger

gekko
nemesis
kirk
ghengis
homer
honkey
monty
absolut
professional killer
east wind

9. teammates who did not win mwc previously: (14)
stormrider
qwerty
zer
orlando the axe
enigman
browning
liger
nemesis
kirk
homer
honkey
monty

cave pretty much missed both lists for me because he got shafted in the lobby during mwc07 finals

yea for my counts, i didn't count players that did not actually play at all in the finals match, or even just a majority of the games, because it is super easy to just inflate your numbers if you played on teams with huge rosters, and I always played on teams with small rosters. so i didn't count honkey, pk, etc. orlando the ax, wtf?

ah honkey don't count but i thought pk was there for bullz finals or sp finals! heh pk might not have even been on bullz. ota played in the finals yeah, i remember cave and ram just sitting in lobby and i think the game was full every time cave was going to join and say something [and didn't say anything on vent though]

i think i have most SD wins tied with cw at 3 (np 06, tcox 07, armageddon 08; mine cox 07 arma 08 sp 11)

Gkg you deserve all this credit for sure. Mainly because you are the only person who actually cares this much about a 15 year old game. A myth scholar? And how much time did it take you to figure out all these stats Jesus Christ....

Most people like myself play mwc and tournies to play good matches and have fun not to become self absorbed in an outdated game. Holy shit good riddance and goodbye

without myth, how will gkg have his ego stroked? he'll be back... it's really the only thing he has going for himself.

also, no one that cares THIS much about myth simply walks away from it...

again to be clear, i never said i was retiring from myth, only myth tournaments. it would be idiotic for anyone to say they are retiring entirely from a whole game. i felt the need to announce it to pre-empt the undoubted trolls-to-come saying "omg you are so scared / such a pussy for not entering / competing in this tournament". I gave fair warning, so there can be no attempted false interpretations as to what reasoning I may have for not entering any particular tournament, since no other tournaments existed when I announced it. BUAHAHAHA.

I will of course return to the game, and even tournaments, if I ever have a change of heart, regardless of the undoubted trolling that will come my way for doing so. But I wouldn't count on it! In the end, only time will tell. But regardless of whether I return or not, I also feel that I am at a turning point right now no matter what, and I oblige myself this one post, earned after 15 years with the game, to reflect back on my many enjoyable memories with this game.

This is the wrong thread for this comment, but CW is definitely top top 10 all time. I can't believe Kirk put Nemesis and Zer on that list over him. Paris definitely has an argument to be on it due to his team success over such a long period of time.

Better to have a top 6 list of people you would play with and feel as close to 100% comfortable as possible.

Congrats on the tourney career gkg, very impressive.

It's funny how my competitive myth career has come full circle involving you. My first jaunt into was in an order with you MoM (Knights of Amber) on b.net playing order matches and the like. I remember playing a lot of trow FR and learned a lot. Now a decade later winning a mwc (god that's a long time lol) with you as you walk off into the sunset. Good memories man, best of luck moving forward.

On a side note - I've played against and capped against many people over the years. gkg was by far the toughest opponent and captain I've ever been around. Was a pleasure being involved with you at your prime.

Lastly, those who bad mouth or have a grudge against gkg have probably never been at the top looking down. It's much tougher to defend a crown or title than it is to gain it. This is just a video game but it's true for most things in life.

oh yea rat, dang I had no idea you were in MoM / Knights of Amber with me, with X-com and EZ. I know Sin was in it I think too, and maybe his brother. Yes, a lot of FR trow. Yea we go all the way back to the beginning then. Speaking of the beginning, I met a new myther the other day (codex) who said he was 15 years old. Which means a lot of us had been mything since about the same time he was born. Kind of crazy to think about.

anyway thanks man, was good teaming and winning mwc with you this year.

well i would take nem off for cw for sure and have cw move up quite a bit, but nem's wide variety of accomplishments, from winning opop ffa (during opop's best years), setting records on m2 mdq, winning mwc makes kirk's placement of nem very understandable (especially since kirk was considering coop success as well). also like 5 or 6 years ago when i named some mythers off to my cousin (r00 civil), nem was one he definitely recognized!

I remember when GKG and cacra were up and comers, and tried to play spoiler in MWC. I think we beat them almost every match (wanna say they got us 1 time, or it was really close) but lotsa peeps knew gkg was gonna be a real good player then. I don't think anyone thought he would dedicate so much time to the game and improve so much. As big of a d-bag as he can be sometimes (can also be cool sometimes), id have to say he has done it across multiple generations of mything, and he will not retire when he gets that old itch.

In fact I wonder how much of this is spured from our group lobby conversation of "what are retired mythers doing now?". To have gkgs skill level you almost have to go all in and stay sharp. Why not leave at the top, instead of slowly but surely destroying your reputation through inactivity etc... and becoming a person on a ta that says "used to be 5 balls, hasn't played in a year, doesnt care, 3 balls..... if he shows"

Because most normal people recognize it's a pointless video game?

I don't know why I bother pointing that out, i'm pretty sure most of you still think tirri has always been serious on the forums all these years.

so tirri's not in the myth father's club with grim?
:(

so cu did you realize tirri wasn't so serious in the forums after all these years, before-or-after you verbally attacked him on mwc05 forums (probably the real reason the finals never got played)?

I forgot to add:

Only player to create a new gametype - King of the Map. (thanks for Punkuser for building it). Quite possibly the best gametype ever, better than any of the other gametypes Bungie made (flag rally being the only contending gametype). YOUR WELCOME MYTH COMMUNITY.

Thats one thing you said I cant agree with. "Quite possibly the best gametype ever, better than any of the other gametypes Bungie made (flag rally being the only contending gametype)."

Its pretty cool as a 2 tm gametype but not so much FFA. I like more head to head full army vs full army type fighting maps. Like CTF for ffa especially on Gimble and 2 tm maps like Grilling Grounds, Barb Valley and The Barrens lmoth where the main focus is killing the other army instead of tagging flags. Maps and gametypes that are more like a normal battle where 2 armies line up face to face on a battlefield.

Post by punkUser »

Nah see Sam you're playing a meta-game with FFA CTF that isn't Myth. In reality if you're trying to win you don't nicely line up and 1v1, followed by another 1v1, etc. in CTF. You backstab, steal unguarded flags and other stuff that you'd probably say isn't "honorable" but is the optimal way to play the game type.

Just take a look at the FFA league from last week... as usual, lots of bitching about doubling, hate-play, "guests", etc. The reality is that is FFA, like it or not. It's terribly "unfair" and quite random. You can get screwed with very little you can do about it. And if you're comfortable with that averaging out in the long run (like in a league), it can be a different sort of fun. But as soon as you start imposing meta-rules or complaining about how people play, you've gone beyond what the game actually is.

Anyways we've had this conversation before so sorry to hijack the thread. I'm not really a fan of KOTM FFA either, but let's not pretend that these invented "two teams line up and fight" really should happen very often in optimally-played FFA. That's 2-team/1v1 territory obviously.
