How to get new players [real guide]

Ok, this has been said and put up in many different, logical and illogical ways, specially in last 3-4 years.
The most recent we all know was Renwood's kickstart try but that was a fail the moment he set up the page.
Kay, back to the topic! A 'humanly possible' way to get more players to play myth is by advertising the website itself, yes, you heard it.
So how advertising can be done?
- PTC (paid to click) is the cheapest alternative where you can by 2,000 original and legit visitors in as low as 15-20$. This ofcourse has its own flaws as most of the traffic coming in such way is not very interested in websites content, so you can get like 5-10 players at most.
- Google ads is far better, just a little costly thou, you can target 'the gaming community' on different gaming websites by customizing the limitless options configure who actually sees your ads.
- Another option is thru banner exchange, you can swap your banners with other websites. (http://www.thebannerexchange.com/main/faq/) - A very cost effective, and working option.
- Google's video adwords, aka, the youtube ads is undoubtedly the best option. you can do so by first putting up ads of 'the gjol' on myth related videos, new mutator's shoutcasts, mwc reviews etc. This can be extended to other bungie, rts or strategy games videos depending on the budget.
Please note that unless myth's free download link is made public, I don't see any reason behind anyone paying for a game with this crappy graphics (yeah, its a fact, check Halo 4) in 2012.
Whats your take on this? mythers!

If there was a solid plan to advertise I'd chip in a few bucks to see if a result was evident.

I think we should all wear Myth 2 T-Shirts.
I still have mine from when I bought the game years ago.

Don't we have the fundamental issue that we don't really have an easy, legal way to distribute the game even if we convince people to be interested first though? It's one thing to have a fan community provide a download link informally, it's quite another to be doing paid advertising for it...

How much do WOW gold farmers earn ?
We pool funds to hire say 100 gold farmers to come and play myth 24-7, we pay them their usual rate, we reap the benefits !!!
They are gamers so they should pick up the game pretty quick, hell they will prob get better than us after playing 24-7 for a few days !!!
I can imagine the MWC teams now..
Thats gold !

Yea I kinda think this is the biggest issue. Making the game more easily available. Because if we wanted to a bunch of us could post links to Myth all over the internet, game forums, Facebook, twitter and we could also do banner ads etc. This would probably get quite a few people interested but then the hard part is them getting a copy of the game. Even though they can buy copies from ebay or whatever that involves more work for someone and thats where they would probably lose interest. It needs to be available as a legal download so people can easily get it. I had asked I think last year at the Marius forum if anyone has every contacted Take2 to ask them if they could make Myth available as a paid download. I was told it was a good idea but no one knew if anyone had.
I think that would be the first thing we need to do is see if Take2 will make Myth available as a paid download. For Take2 though if they did that there would be maintenance and expenses involved. I think our best bet would be for anyone in the Myth community that has ever had contact with Take2 (maybe some people at Magma) to ask Take2 about it. Then agree that Magma or whoever would take care of everything involve in hosting it and all Take2 would have to do is collect the money. I think that if we could do that then it would be more worthwhile to start advertising for Myth. Until then I think it will be hard to get a lot of new people.
Edit: The download version would also have to be the current update maybe some of the most common plugins and set up to connect to the servers right away. So that people that DL'ed could just install it an play. Whoever hosted it may have to set it up so that they host the DL and collect the money with Take2 having full access to the DL site so that they could see how many times it was DL'ed and there being only one exclusive place where it could be legally DL'ed. It being set up so that whoever hosted it did everything and just sent the money over to Take2 once a month or something but Take2 being able to monitor everything so that they knew they were getting paid for each DL. Everything would have to be completely transparent. I think the only way to get Take2 to agree would be for them to have to do nothing at all but have money sent to them once a month or whatever and them being able to know every time it was DL'ed so they couldnt get scammed.
Is the trial version updated? Can someone DL the trial version and log in an play right away with everyone else on Marius or GoS? That would be a start anyhow. If updating the trial version is allowed.

It has been tried several times over the years; basically each time Take2 has not been interested in bothering with anything to do with Myth (even basic legal permissions) unless there's 6+ figures attached.

Yes, in fact the 1.8 trial version was just recently released. Can get it here as always:
http://projectmagma.net/what/. We do need to update that page to mention GoS though.

EA are giving away Red Alert and Tiberian Sun for free download, why can't Take2 be reasonable too?

As I understand it, having asked friends in the gaming industry about these sorts of situations, is that for Take 2 to do anything regarding Myth they will need to get lawyers involved to draw up paperwork. This itself costs so much that the benefit has to be significant in comparison, especially if the property is considered theoretically more valuable in the future. If the benefit is unlikely to exceed this base cost by a large margin, no individual at Take 2 will be able to justify the action to their superiors. So it gets sent up the chain until it stops at the first middle manager who looks at nothing but the numbers, and gets killed there.
Caveat: I have not spoken to anyone at Take 2 nor to anyone who has spoken to Take 2. But this is apparently the case for games like Grim Fandango, for example.

Right, as I understand it in their view the potential value of Myth is that Bungie might want to buy it back at some point, and Bungie has a lot of money. Thus they aren't really interested in selling anything related to it for what amounts to pennies for a corporation that size (<6 figures). It's just not worth their effort compared to doing nothing and hoping that Bungie (or someone else) offers them lots of money in the future.

Even if they had it as a paid download they would have big legal fees? At least then if one of us got someone interested in trying it we could tell them where to easily get it.

I wondered the same thing, but apparently paid downloads imply support which takes resources and...paperwork. Not sure how GOG does it but at the very least if you haven't done so yet, go vote for Myth there:

It's pretty much the standard for software - if you pay for something you expect SOME level of support, even for shareware.
Offering software for paid download without providing any level of support would be a disaster imo, look at all the questions about installs and cutscenes and video drivers that get asked on the magma forums. Magma provides an incredible level of 'customer support' for something they don't get 1 cent for in return, but I doubt that they'd feel as generous with their time if they were providing support to a game that they updated for free which someone else (TakeTwo) WAS making money off of.

Correct, and I don't think any of us really wants to be contractually obligated to do it either, as much as we love Myth...

Has anybody from Magma reached out to anybody from Bungie? Bungie has always been a community oriented game developer. They might be more willing to buy back Myth and make this happen than Take2. Doesn't hurt to ask. On a side note, I don't have my Myth II preorder t-shirt anymore.

Have we promoted 1.8 at Bungie forums like we did for 1.7.2?

That's a good idea.
Also send more Myth films to YouTube? This one got a bunch of surprised and pleased comments by people who didn't realize the game still exists:

Just remember to add the

So once we make the comprehensive all time myth player list would it be too invasive to add known contact info? I guess we could contact those we have and ask...

But it would be easier to send out a mass e-mail.
