You don't need 4 players in a game to play ranked.
You need 2.

I tried starting a game hosted by me earlier and was unable to press start. It was me and another person.

Go download/apply the latest 1.8 patch again. The original build of 1.8 didn't include the modification to allow you to start with 2 (requiring 4 has always been a *client* thing since 1.0).

I thought marius allowed for ranked with less than 4 people though.

that was tourney rooms. rank rooms still required 4.
