Film archives?
Film archives?
One of my favorite parts of playing myth years ago when the community was more active was watching films posted to online film archives. There used to be quite a few websites that exclusively hosted funny or interesting films uploaded by various users. It seems that now those sites are all but gone. I've browsed around here and on marius.net and the tain, but there really aren't any websites devoted to film collections anymore. Can anyone point me to an active thread or site that still has working film download links, if one even exists?
Re: Film archives?
you should try google searching the old MWC (i.e. "MWC98" "Myth World Cup 2006") websites. they have films archived
i don't think there are any websites devoted to films anymore as you have spoke of. which means it could be a great time to make such a website

Every game played on the GoS server is archived.

Didn't know about gos saving every game played. That's a nice feature. Too bad there's no way to know if they're any good At least there's no shortage of new films. I just wish there was someone curating a film collection made available on the web. Maybe I'll volunteer. I just have no website creation experience.
Re: Film archives?
Jottle lamented you don't know if the film is good. 2 ideas...allow people to do a thumbs-up/down vote on films, just like you can do on Youtube videos. 2nd idea, let people add user-created tags, so people looking at the film listings know what things people have found cool in a filmswitch wrote:Every game played on the GoS server is archived.

If a recent game has 30 thumbs up and a user tag of "hilarious_pus_accident", perhaps that will let you decide to watch it.

You can make a website even with no knowledge using something simple like a free Google site (http://sites.google.com). It's all point and click. You have limited freedom of what you make, but its stupidly simple & easy. Maybe it'll be good enough for you. Here's a simple site I've made:Jottle wrote:I just wish there was someone curating a film collection made available on the web. Maybe I'll volunteer. I just have no website creation experience.

For your site, you can create pages that are "File Cabinets". When you upload a film, you could give it an appropriate name, you can also type in a file description after the file is uploaded. If name & description aren't enough for you to organize all your films, you could make multiple File Cabinet pages if you wanted to segment your film collection into different cabinets.
Learning how to make a "real" site will give you more control, flexibility, and probably make some tasks easier. But that may be more work than you want to do.
Maybe someone else will have a better suggestion.
To protect all your work, since you're dependent on this tool rather than raw knowledge of working with databases & HTML, just in case Google discontinues Sites someday or something, make sure every film you upload, you keep a copy of locally, with appropriate naming and maybe a document or spreadsheet to make any notes you want to make about any film.
Re: Film archives?
For recent stuff, a good place to start would be to check out some tournament games - all of them have linked films. If you check out NewMutator's youtube channel he does a bunch of shoutcasts of good games as well, and often links the replays.
Definitely voting up/down games would be a nice feature to have. I'll see what I can do on that when I get some time. In the meantime though, definitely feel free to create a site - or even just a thread - where you link good replays. I'd be happy to pin such a think if you find it easiest to use the forums.

Re: Film archives?
This may have been a cool feature 10+ yrs ago, but these days... the user base now is simply too small to make this worthwhile, imo.jason_ac wrote:2 ideas...allow people to do a thumbs-up/down vote on films, just like you can do on Youtube videos. 2nd idea, let people add user-created tags, so people looking at the film listings know what things people have found cool in a film

Re: Film archives?
First step would just be counting downloads of a given film and being able to sort/search by that. That's pretty easy in any case and should bubble some stuff to the top in theory.adrenaline wrote: This may have been a cool feature 10+ yrs ago, but these days... the user base now is simply too small to make this worthwhile, imo.
Re: Film archives?
Linking to the Tain's film section in case others didn't know it existed.
Re: Film archives?
I still like the idea of a separate site dedicated solely to films. I might be the only one that really enjoys watching all the replays of how crappy I am at this game, but there are so many great moments that could be shared with the community. Perhaps some "best of films" might even get some new users into the community.
Re: Film archives?
You could also turn some of those moments into short videos, then compile some together for interesting clip vids to watch. They'd be "advertising" for Myth on Youtube. If you're on a Mac, you can go from Myth recording -> video for free.Jottle wrote:there are so many great moments that could be shared with the community
Re: Film archives?
Shameless self-promotion of myth on bungie.net and reddit forums always helps
Re: Film archives?
Are you referring to the quicktime recording method or is there another?jason_ac wrote:You could also turn some of those moments into short videos, then compile some together for interesting clip vids to watch. Re: Film archives?
QuickTime. And you can get sound either by using SoundFlower to route sound from Myth directly to QuickTime, or by having your microphone pickup your speaker soundKashmir wrote:Are you referring to the quicktime recording method or is there another?

Depending upon CPU load, SoundFlower might cause frame skips, but you may not care.
Re: Film archives?
I'm familiar with the QT method, I was just wondering if you were referring to another method that I wasn't aware of, thanks.
