You should actually avoid using 1.8.1 gameplay actually as there a few known bugs (as noted, it's still beta). Just ensure that at least one person in the game is 1.8.0 and the rest can be 1.8.1 or whatever if desired.

Yeah autohosts are real games... if you can't join one of them or have another reason to think that the computer hosting them has been disconnected and yet it still shows up let me know, but that's how autohost works.
