Knowing this, I've not found it to be a huge problem in practice, and worth the advantages that the vertical sprites stuff brings.

I don't think even Google offers a simple method for that. You can just star the endpoints and do directions on the phone or similar. Starred places, etc. are automatically synced/in the cloud.
